Step 10 - Clean House

1 post in this topic

STEP 10: Continued to take personal inventory and when were wrong promptly admitted it.

This is where the rubber meets the road.  You learned how to do this step in Steps 4-9.

BB Pg 84This thought brings us to Step Ten, which suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our lifetime. Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code.

This thought is the 9th Step promises

New mistakes are just that. New.  Not the old ones from Step 4

WHEN TO START STEP TEN

1.      You do not have to complete Step Nine to do Step Ten? Nope

2.      BB Pg 84 – “…as we cleaned up the past.”  or as we continued to do Step 9

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE

1.      BB Pg 84 – “It should continue for our lifetime.”

2.      You do this step when selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear crop up.  Every day or even every hour…whenever these crop up.

THE FIVE PARTS TO STEP TEN

BB Pg 84

1.      Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear.

2.      When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them.

3.      We discuss them with someone immediately

4.      Make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone.

5.      Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help.

THE LEARNING PROCESS STEP TEN

The first four parts of Step 10 are a learning process.  It’s basically on the job training.  You will learn as you go.  These a Steps 4 thru 9 on a daily basis.

This is simply not just a mental process.  This is a learning of the heart which involves a vital transformation as we do Steps 4-9.  This transformation (Spiritual growth) will increase with Steps 10, 11 & 12.

HOW OFTEN DO WE DO STEP TEN

We continue to watch for the 4 grosser handicaps.  “When” not “If” any of those crop up.  This could be a few times a day or weeks in between.  According to the Big Book, there is no writing or journaling involved. It’s on the fly.

If you get angry in the morning, are you going to wait till bedtime?  Why let it ruin your whole day.  Resolve it immediately and quickly.

This thought process is new to us.  Sometimes we won’t know what to do.  Our new mistakes will continually need God’s help.  Ask God for help.  The answer will come.

10th STEP PROMISES

BB Pg 84 – And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone—even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality—safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition.

Sanity – Can tell true from false

The problem has been removed – Mental obsession has been removed.  Physical allergy is still there…waiting

Fit spiritual condition – In close contact with God or God conscience.  A “recovered” alcoholic can quickly become “unrecovered.”

WE ARE NEVER CURED OF ALCOHOLISM

BB Pg 85 – It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God’s will into all of our activities. “How can I best serve Thee—Thy will (not mine) be done.’’ These are thoughts which must go with us constantly. We can exercise our will power along this line all we wish. It is the proper use of the will.

1.      We are never cured of our physical allergy.  It will always be there.  Mental obsession will always lurk on the other side of our “fit spiritual condition.”  Mental obsession is patient.  It will wait till we are weak (spiritually) and creep its ugly head into our thoughts.

2.      We have a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.  If we are in close contact with God and make Him our power, He will keep us happy, joyous and free.  That is what God wants for us.
